                Medical transcriptionists employ their in-depth understanding of medical language and critical thinking abilities when transcribing to ensure that errors are kept to a minimum. They pause and seek clarification if they come across contradictory information, such as someone listed as taking a drug they are allergic to, to ensure the record is true.

A medical transcriptionist turns pertinent, current, and confidential patient information into a text document (MT). This content can be printed and added to the patient's file, just kept electronically, or added to the file while still being kept electronically. MTs who work for hospitals or for other healthcare facilities can undertake medical transcribing. It work can be done by MTs working onsite for service providers (doctors or their group practices) or telecommuting for them from home; by MTs working as independent contractors or telecommuting employees for an outsourced service that performs the work offsite under contract to a hospital, clinic, physician group, or other healthcare provider; or by MTs working directly for the outsourced service.
